Lukashenko: Development of privatization creates good opportunities for business in Belarus

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) – The accelerated privatization process creates good opportunities for doing business in Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko said at the opening ceremony of the Belarusian-Turkish business forum in Minsk on 11 November, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus offers good opportunities for business development thanks to the accelerated privatization process. Some 70% of the production facilities are state-owned. Unlike Russia and other countries of the CIS and Eastern Europe, Belarus has made sure that the largest national enterprises remain state property, which allows us to provide full support to them. As a result, their manufacturing capabilities and competitiveness on the global market have been improved considerably,” Alexander Lukashenko noted.

In order to improve the efficiency of the national economy, Belarus has made a choice if favor of pin-point privatization. “We are interested in developing mutually beneficial cooperation with large strategic investors. The sale of state-owned shares of Beltransgaz, MTS mobile carrier and other companies is an example of the successful privatization deals, which were among the biggest ones in Europe,” the President said.

The National Agency of Investment and Privatization together with the World Bank have developed modern approaches and tools that correspond to the most advanced international practices. They are designed to help Belarus offer even clearer and transparent privatization terms to foreign companies.

“We have gained experience in supporting large-scale projects implemented by Turkish companies. In this regard, I consider this major forum as an important step towards the establishment of long-term contacts between the business communities of our countries. I am confident that the upcoming meetings and negotiations with potential Belarusian partners will raise the economic cooperation between our countries to a new level,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
