Lukashenko: Demographic stability is number one priority for Belarus

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) – The demographic issue remains the number one priority for Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko said as he talked to the participants of the nationwide scientific conference “New technologies in medicine” at the N.N. Aleksandrov National Oncology and Medical Radiology Center on 7 October, BelTA has learned.

Belarus has timely outlined the main areas of work in healthcare and made serious headway in reducing cancer cases and CVE-related deaths. According to the President, the country's main goal is to tackle the current demographic issue to make the birth rate much higher than the mortality rate. Progress is good in this area.

“We attach increased attention to healthcare and we will continue doing it because these are human lives,” stressed Alexander Lukashenko. Education also remains among the country's priorities.

The head of state took note of high importance of such conferences where specialists may speak freely about existing problems. Alexander Lukashenko added that when meeting with conference participants he wanted to hear their assessments of the health system, and prospects of its development. The President proposed to determine how to allocate the leading medical technologies to the regions. The necessary material base is being created for this purpose.

It is important that the conference participants were able to familiarize themselves with the National Positron Emission Tomography Center and the National Molecular Genetic Laboratory for Cancer Research. The construction of the PET Center began in September 2013 and cost Br441.4 billion. The center will specialize in early diagnostics of oncological, neurological and cardiac diseases.

With regard to the cancer research laboratory, its construction cost Br255.5 billion. It includes six diagnostic units for research in molecular oncology. All of them are fitted with ultra-modern high-tech equipment for the early diagnostics of oncological diseases, timely treatment and assessment of its effectiveness.
