Lukashenko comments on arrest of deputy emergencies minister on bribery charges

MOGILEV, 21 March (BelTA) – Belarusian Deputy Emergencies Minister Dmitry Begun has been arrested on charges of bribery, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said during a visit to Kronospan OSB in Mogilev on 21 March, BelTA has learned.

Dmitry Begun is suspected of taking a bribe from a businessman in return for issuing an acceptance certificate for a new building not compliant with fire safety standards.

“He took a bribe. They all were caught red-handed. Why take offense with me? All are equal before the law, including ministers and deputy ministers. He will face no less than eight years in prison,” the head of state noted.

Alexander Lukashenko pointed out that in such situations, government officials do not accept construction projects themselves. They entrust this to their subordinates. “This is how the society starts to rot. Dmitry Begun held a big post. What else did he need?” the Belarusian leader stressed.
