Lukashenko: Belarus able to protect itself without militarization of economy

MINSK, 9 May (BelTA) - Belarus is capable of protecting itself without the militarization of its economy, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko told the media on 9 May, BelTA informs.

When asked on whether the budget envisaged for the defense sector of Belarus meets the current situation, the head of state said: "First of all, I cannot militarize the economy. Militarization of the economy is not just a phrase. These are factories and people with military thinking who produce military products. What will we do when these goods are not needed? We need to think about it. Secondly, people live under a peaceful sky today, and we want our people to have a better life. We cannot inject huge amounts of money into the armed forces.”

According to the head of state, the Belarusian doctrine is not based on any kind of aggressive war. "We have an absolutely defensive doctrine. Its essence is to inflict unacceptable damage on our enemy if anyone dares to fight against us,” he said. “We have money for this, and we spend the amount we need to accomplish this task,” he added.

Alexander Lukashenko added that money is an important but not the main thing in the matter. “It is the people who win. We have enough technology and weapons to protect the country. We demonstrate this during military exercises and parades,” the Belarusian leader said.
