EAEU criticized for placing corporate interests first

SOCHI, 14 May (BelTA) - The interests of individual companies are sometimes placed above the decisions taken by the heads of state in the Eurasian Economic Union, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Sochi, BelTA has learned.

“Over the past three and a half years from the date of entry of the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty into force, much work has been done to promote the interstate interaction. However, the activities that have been carried out so far could have been more efficient,” Alexander Lukashenko stated.

According to the president, many agreements remain unfulfilled. “Initially we set up the union to promote economic cooperation and build a system of equal market relations. However, politics regularly interferes with trade. Interests of individual producers are regularly put above the decisions we have taken. This contradicts our agreements,” the head of state emphasized.

“The only positive thing is that we have finally started thinking about creating forward-looking mechanisms not only to settle disputes but also to prevent them,” the Belarusian leader said.
