Children show mock-ups of lost architectural landmarks to Belarus president

MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – The students of Minsk Architecture and Arts Gymnasium No. 75 have made miniature copies of ancient and lost architectural monuments under the Our Heritage project. They showed their works to Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko at the exhibition “Leadership: Key to Success” featuring children's and youth achievements at Minsk Secondary School No. 61 on 26 May, BelTA has learned.

“We are reconstructing what was lost long ago. These are the architectural landmarks destroyed by people, time, and wars. Some of them are under renovation at the moment. For instance, there is only one tumbledown house left from the huge Pavlinovo mansion compound. Shchorsy Mansion Complex, the so-called ‘Belarusian Versailles', has been almost destroyed,” students Anna Gamezo and Nadezha Frolova said.

The students build the miniature copies relying on the old Belarusian and foreign documents and photos and even the recollections of those who once worked there. The students used cardboard and materials at hand to “reconstruct” the monuments. Some details are smaller than 1mm.

At the exhibition the pupils showed the miniature copies of some estates including Pavlinovo in Baranovichi District, Shchorsy in Novogrudok District, and Blon in Pukhovichi District. All in all they made around 30 copies. Most of them are now exhibited in local museums.

“We do this to help people appreciate and remember their history. We believe that our effort will help restore Belarus' historical heritage. The fact that the state pays attention to this topic, like in the case of Mir Castle and Nesvizh Castle, only proves it,” the pupils remarked.

Alexander Lukashenko was surprised with the quality of the students' works. “This is amazing!” he enthused. According to him, modern technologies make the restoration of these monuments an easier task.
