Belarus to strengthen institution of local councils of deputies

SLUTSK, 16 February (BelTA) – The institution of local councils of deputies will be strengthened, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko noted as he met with employees of Slutsk Yeast Plant and Slutsk Sugar Plant on 16 February, BelTA has learned.

The head of state stressed the importance of the local councils of deputies, which are meant to handle pressing problems. “These are the people that can get through to the authorities faster. A problem can be solved faster with the help of a local deputy,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

It is important that the deputies adopt the local budget, which includes wages of healthcare and education workers, the president underlined. “I have been instructing district and city councils of deputies to deal with topical matters together with heads of district and city executive committees,” Alexander Lukashenko pointed out. He also stressed that the deputies work voluntarily and this job is unpaid.

“We will strengthen the institution of local councils of deputies,” the president reassured. He recalled that he was once offered to eliminate local councils of deputies, but he refused to do so. The practice has shown that the decision to preserve them was right. “The local deputies know the situation better than others and they can influence social parasites and those leading an immoral life,” he added.

Every citizen should vote in the elections to the local councils of deputies and cast a vote for who he or she views as the most decent candidate. “You need to go and cast your vote. The political campaign is underway, and it necessary to take part in it,” Alexander Lukashenko believes.
