Belarus to accede to Hague Convention on International Recovery of Child Support

MINSK, 15 March (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko authorized the Justice Ministry to sign the Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance. The decree was officially published on the national legal Internet portal, BelTA has learned.

The convention was adopted by the Hague Conference on Private International Law on 23 November 2007.

Earlier the Justice Ministry said that it would be appropriate for Belarus to accede to this convention. Today Belarus is guided by the similar UN Convention signed in 1956. But it is significantly outdated.

The accession to the convention will help Belarus address the issues related to the execution of court decisions on the recovery of child maintenance in the European Union member states. The absence of international treaties between Belarus and EU countries on recognition of such court orders makes it impossible to execute the maintenance recovery decisions issued by Belarusian courts if a parent evades child maintenance in one of the EU states.
