Belarus' State Border Committee criticized for underperformance

MINSK, 26 July (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko is dissatisfied with certain aspects in the operation of the State Border Committee. He made the statement at the session held on 26 July to discuss the operation of border protection agencies, BelTA informs.

The President remarked that following his instruction there was a surprise inspection at border protection agencies, and its results were discussed at the session. “I was informed about the results of this surprise inspection. There were several opinions. We need to make an analysis. It is needed to thank some people and, maybe, punish some others. I decided not to do it behind the scenes. There should be a principled talk, we are military people. Moreover, I am seriously concerned about a number of results of this inspection,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

The head of state noted that this is the third discussion of border security problems at the level of the President this year. “It means that there is not only concern. Frankly speaking, there is strong dissatisfaction with certain aspects in the operation of the State Border Committee,” the Belarusian leader said. “Since Belarus is a transit country (the border acquires huge importance), we cannot neglect these issues.”

“The main thing is not thank or punish anyone. The main objective is to improve border protection. I do not doubt that it will be improved. It will be improved with or without you (this is the matter). We cannot have problems having such a big number of border guards,” Alexander Lukashenko added.
