Belarus sees development of missile systems as deterrent factor

MINSK, 1 July (BelTA) – Belarus sees the development of missile systems as a deterrent factor, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said when speaking at a solemn meeting on the occasion of the Independence Day of Belarus on 1 July, BelTA has learned.

The head of state underlined that in a short period of time Belarus has, in fact, created a new industry. “Not only have we started to produce these systems for ourselves. Today, some states are already queuing up and want us to produce these systems for them. It is not a prohibited weapon. This is a very strong deterrent factor. The country, which produces its own missiles, is unlikely to be attacked. This is a very important fact for the security and independence of our state,” the head of state said.

“We frighten no one. We are a peaceful nation. We will do everything to ensure that we have peace not only inside the country but around us. We strive for this. But we must keep our powders dry,” he said.

The President stressed that the Belarusian army is perfectly trained and equipped with the advanced weaponry. “During my presidency alone, we have modernized our armed forces three times,” the Belarusian leader said.

Methods of warfare have changed drastically. “There will be no longer fronts as during Bagration Operation. War will be completely different. We have studied these wars, starting from Iraq and ending with clashes in Ukraine and Syria.”

According to the head of state, the Belarusian army is mobile. Today the focus is precisely on the mobility of troops and units. “They need to be like a sting of a bee: suddenly appear where needed, attack an enemy, and immediately withdraw. Jets and tanks do not matter much in modern warfare,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

Alexander Lukashenko underlined that in the present conditions the new weapons – missiles – are needed to inflict irreparable damage on an enemy. “And you know, we did this. We make no secret of this. We created the missile system just in over a year and a half almost from scratch, and we virtually had no funds for this,” the head of state added.

The President also said that the new Belarusian missile system was tested on a test site in a deserted territory. “I said to our military that when you test it in Belarus, on our training grounds, then I would assume that you have completed the task. They did well. They took the missile into the stratosphere and destroyed it 1.5 meters away from the target. It means, they can,” Alexander Lukashenko noted.
