Belarus president wants understandable division of responsibilities between sport agencies

MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) – All the components — the Sports and Tourism Ministry, the national centers for training Olympic athletes, the National Olympic Committee, federations in charge of individual sports, supervisory boards — should take their own position in the overall system with an understandable division of responsibilities. President of Belarus, President of the National Olympic Committee Alexander Lukashenko made the statement during the conference held at premises of Belarus' National Olympic Committee on 30 May, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko said: “I would like to emphasize the special role the National Olympic Committee plays as the key sport organization of the country. Let me make it clear: the National Olympic Committee should be home for everyone. The committee should provide guidelines, financial aid and other kinds of aid to federations. The committee should promptly resolve such problems. You will be the first agency to bear the responsibility for these matters. At the same time the Belarus President Administration and the central government will not stay away. I've given instructions to work out a clear result-oriented scheme for interaction between all the agencies concerned. All the components — the Sports and Tourism Ministry, national centers, the National Olympic Committee, sport federations, and supervisory boards — should take their own place in the overall system with an understandable division of responsibilities.”

Sport federations have to step up their game, said the head of state. “We have made the decision to reinforce them together. Most of them are led by sport specialists. We have chosen the government agencies and other organizations, which will help the federations via supervisory boards. Their job is to provide additional resources and administrative support for successful work and, certainly, control over the rational spending of resources. You created so much noise while implementing this policy! Everything could have been done calmly,” the Belarus president was convinced.

Alexander Lukashenko also said he believes it is necessary to more actively tap into the potential of the sport community via permanent commissions operating under the aegis of the National Olympic Committee. He mentioned the Women and Sport commission and the mass media commission as examples of successful work in the past Olympic cycle.
