Belarus president wants law enforcement agencies optimized, yet effective

MINSK, 10 March (BelTA) – The optimization process should not reduce the performance of the law enforcement system. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement during the government conference held on 10 March to discuss the performance of the law enforcement system in 2016 and the optimization of the law enforcement and court systems, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko made it clear: “The [optimization] process must not have a negative effect on the quality of operation of the law enforcement and court systems. We cannot allow the reduction of the law enforcement bloc to result in a surge of crime. This is why it is necessary to preserve powerful and balanced structures, which are capable of doing their job.”

Yet the head of state noted that favorable conditions and prerequisites for optimization are now available. Belarusian law enforcement agencies are rather strong and have the necessary experience. The personnel are well-equipped and well-trained. The organization of operation of Belarusian security agencies has produced positive results, including a lower crime rate in the country. “Belarus is one of the world's top ten countries with the lowest crime rate and a high level of security. This is why we can now talk about further optimization as a priority,” explained the President.

Alexander Lukashenko also pointed out that optimization does not equal reduction. “We should not limit the process to simple reduction of personnel numbers although we don't need people, who are surplus to requirements,” he said.
