Belarus president wants explanations for rise in military hazing incidents

MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) – I would like to hear explanations for the recent increase in the number of hazing incidents in the army, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at a session on the results of the inspection of the Armed Forces on 31 May, BelTA has learned.

According to the head of state, instructions were given to study the issues of ideological activity as it directly affects the military discipline. “The reports show a steady tendency towards reducing number of offenses in the army. They still happen, however. According to the crime rate statistics, the situation in the armed forces is better than in the country in general. The situation with corruption incidents is under control. The number of crimes related to the death of personnel in the line of duty has decreased as well,” said Alexander Lukashenko

At the same he drew attention to the fact that in 2017 there was a rise in the incidents of hazing. “I would like to know the reason. Is that really a surge in the number of so-called hazing incidents or the defense ministry and other relevant government bodies have toughened the requirements and started to take these all into account?” the president asked.

“All people in uniform, especially commanders, should be a model of decency and good performance. This applies both to the use of weapons and training and education of subordinates,” the Belarusian leader noted.

He emphasized that it is the officers corps who are responsible for young people, for turning them, over a short period of time, into real soldiers, defenders of the motherland.

Over the past five years the crime rate in the armed forces has declined. Crime ratio (the number of crimes committed per 10,000) in the armed forces totaled 21.2 in 2017 (90.9 across the country). Yet, the number of criminal cases into the violations of the statutory rules governing relations among military personnel has increased since 2017.
