Belarus president slams outside forces for interfering with Syrian affairs

MINSK, 24 April (BelTA) – In his address to the nation and the parliament on 24 April Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko talked about the ongoing conflict in Syria, BelTA has learned.

The head of state pointed out that fight for resources, control over trade flows, and global market domination as the ultimate goal lie at the heart of all modern conflicts. “If you look deeper, if you try harder, you will find oil sooner or later,” he said. “It is glaringly obvious in the Middle East and Syria in particular. They just don't allow the Syrian government to stabilize the country, which has been worn out by seven years of conflict. All kinds of instruments are utilized starting with support of the armed opposition, mass media hype, and ending with direct missile strikes.”

“And they do that instead of giving the Syrian nation the right to determine its fate through negotiations. These forces do all kinds of things, particularly permanent members of the UN [Security Council]. My friend, [UN Secretary General] Antonio Guterres has become involved in this fight. He has even gone on a world tour, making statements: stop, wake up…” noted Alexander Lukashenko.

“Leave Syria alone and give the Syrian nation an opportunity to determine its life and fate. Instead outside forces use the country to show off their might before each other, train their military, or do something else. They tell us that Syria is such a poor country and needs help. I think the Syrian nation can handle things on its own if an opportunity presents itself and Syria is no longer used as a firing range and a training ground,” said the Belarus president.

“But Syria is not an exception. It is the logical continuation of the story that involves Iraq, Libya, Iran, and other countries,” added the Belarusian leader.
