Belarus president promises more arrests on corruption charges soon

BREST, 4 June (BelTA) – New arrests of prominent individuals will be made on charges of corruption soon. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement on 2 June, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko said: “You will hear new facts in the next few days. The individuals in question have already been apprehended. We are now preparing the materials for mass media consumption so that you, reporters, could spread the word to the general public.”

“I've already warned that no one will be forgiven. Particularly those in high offices. Particularly those, who are appointed aides of the president. Those, who are close to me, will face tougher punishments than anyone else,” stressed the head of state.

Alexander Lukashenko remarked that he is definitely displeased by the revelation of corrupted people in high offices. “But I made my stance clear in my address to the nation and the parliament. Later on I mentioned that it is better to be poor and free than rich and in prison. It was a wakeup call for them. Unfortunately, a dozen of unpleasant facts has been detected,” said the president.

“They shouldn't be offended now because I always warn people about it as I appoint them. But it is their fate. They don't have to act surprised. Everyone will face the same treatment if such facts are detected,” concluded the Belarusian leader.
