Belarus president names condition for EEU's effective work with external partners

ASTANA, 31 May (BelTA) – The Eurasian Economic Union should form a highly developed common market of its own. The market is an essential condition for the Union's effective interaction with external partners. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement during the expanded-participation session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana, Kazakhstan on 31 May, BelTA has learned.

According to the Belarusian head of state, many items on the agenda of the Astana summit are related to determining the Eurasian Economic Union's position in the global economy.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that for the sake of a confident dialogue with external partners the Eurasian Economic Union should set up a highly developed common market of its own. “We should be strong on our own. We should enhance the union by all means. Then it will be easier for us to talk to the European Union, China, and other parties. Then we will be strong and will present a joint stance. There is nothing of that for now. But without it the Eurasian Economic Union will not be able to effectively pursue the domestic policy and the foreign one,” the Belarusian head of state is convinced.

In his speech Alexander Lukashenko noted that serious conceptual decisions have been made in the two years since the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty was signed. The foundation for liberalizing transport services, for forming a common electricity market and an export policy was laid down.

“Unfortunately, not everything develops in the way we intended. Some problems still linger. We have discussed the worst ones today. First of all, it is necessary to move the theoretical work into the practical dimension,” believes the Belarus President.
