Belarus president casts vote in municipal elections

MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has cast his vote as part of the campaign to elect members of municipal councils of deputies, BelTA has learned.

The head of state cast his vote at polling station No.1 in Vesnyansky electoral district No.39 in Minsk's Tsentralny District. The polling station is located at premises of the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture.

The municipal election campaign is supposed to elect 18,111 members of 1,309 municipal councils of deputies. Political parties have been more active in comparison with previous election campaigns to the municipal councils of deputies.

Women represent 49.1% of the total number of registered candidates. People under 30 account for 5.3% of the total number of registered candidates while current members of the municipal councils of deputies represent 46.5% of the total number of registered candidates. The candidates are mostly occupied in education, culture, science, healthcare, agriculture, government agencies, manufacturing sector, transport, and civil engineering.

In comparison with the previous elections the number of candidates vying for the seats in the municipal councils of deputies has increased slightly.
