Belarus president calls for tighter partnership of government and NGOs

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – Trade unions bear a huge responsibility in today's conditions in view of certain economic difficulties. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement during the fifth Belarusian People's Congress on 22 June, BelTA has learned.

Representatives of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus are present at the majority of Belarusian enterprises, noted the head of state. “Credit where credit is due, the current leadership of the trade unions has acted fast upon my request concerning the presence of trade unions in private companies. People, our people work there as well and they need our support and protection, too,” stressed Alexander Lukashenko.

“Trade unions take an active stance when some difficulties arise at enterprises. They see and resolve these issues and problems. Honestly speaking, I am pleased with the performance of trade unions these days,” admitted the Belarusian leader.

“But one thing must be understood. Today we have no communist party that existed in the past and bore the huge burden of ideological nurturing of our society. All of that is up to us nowadays, up to the power vertical,” pointed out the President. “This is why since there are no genuine, normal parties in Belarus yet, they have not been formed yet, we have to rely on what we have.” Those are youth organizations, veteran organizations, the union of women, and trade unions.

“We should utilize them in order to resolve the kind of problems that the communist party used to deal with in the past. The communist party did a lot for the sake of the country's development. But since there are none, since the party market has not evolved, one can say, we have to substitute it with the effective organizations that stand for the sovereignty and development of our country,” stated Alexander Lukashenko.
