Belarus' president appoints new sports and tourism minister

MINSK, 5 March (BelTA) – Sergei Kovalchuk has been appointed Belarus' Sports and Tourism Minister. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko approved the corresponding decision on 5 March, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Kovalchuk was born on 14 August 1968 in the village of Zhuravki, Ivanovo District, Brest Oblast. He graduated from the Odessa Higher Artillery Command School in 1989 and the Military Academy of the Republic of Belarus in 1999.

Sergei Kovalchuk served in the Armed Forces from 1989 to 2004. After 2004 he worked in the Security Service of the President of the Republic of Belarus.

Sergei Kovalchuk has been awarded the Order for the Service to the Fatherland 3rd Class, and the medals for Honorable Service 1st, 2nd, 3rd Class.
