Elections 2016. Yermoshina: Most inquiries filed with CEC have nothing to do with the elections

MINSK, 29 June (BelTA) – Most of the inquiries filed with the Central Election Commission (CEC) so far have nothing to do with the elections, CEC Chairperson Lidia Yermoshina told reporters on 29 June, BelTA has learned.

“All in all, from 6 through 28 June, the CEC has received 16 inquiries and 11 of them, almost 69%, have nothing to do with the elections,” Lidia Yermoshina noted. Only five of the letters are related to the election campaign, including three that ask to explain some points in the legislation and two inquiring about the functioning and setting up of election commissions. The majority of the inquiries have come from Minsk and Gomel Oblast.

The CEC has also received four in-person inquiries for information about the nomination of candidates.

As for the letters from citizens who attempt to blackmail the CEC by threatening not go to the polls due to some mundane reasons, the commission said it receives such letters almost every election campaign. “There were some ridiculous complaints. Some, for instance, complained that they had the Eurosport TV service disconnected and that they would not go to the polls until the TV service was turned back. When we receive such letters by post, not through Internet, we always write back saying that every citizen is free to choose whether to participate in the elections or not. There is no need in informing the CEC about it,” Lidia Yermoshina said.
