Xi Jinping: The Silk Road spirit has become a great heritage of human civilization

BEIJING, 15 May (BelTA-TASS) – Chinese President Xi Jinping opened the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in the Chinese capital Beijing on 14 May.

“Spanning thousands of miles and years, the ancient silk routes embody the spirit of peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual benefit,” Xi Jinping said, stressing that “the Silk Road spirit has become a great heritage of human civilization”.

“Over 2,000 years ago, our ancestors opened the transcontinental passage connecting Asia, Europe and Africa,” the Chinese leader noted and emphasized that today it has become an image of peace and cooperation, openness and tolerance, mutual understanding and benefit. “History is our best teacher and it tells us that the civilization is developing through openness and that the coexistence of people is secured through integration,” he stressed.

According to Xi Jinping, the global community has recently been facing variety of complex problems that can be addressed only through joint efforts.

Beijing is hosting the Belt and Road forum on 14-15 May. The event has gathered leaders of 29 countries, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim. All in all, the forum gathered representatives of more than 100 countries. The totaled number of participants exceeded 1,200 people.

The forum included a number of roundtable sessions featuring heads of state, important bilateral meetings, a reception on behalf of the Chinese president and his spouse, and a gala concert.

The Silk Road Economic Belt strategic concept was put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping in September 2013. It is aimed at developing an innovative model of cooperation and a new order of interregional interaction. Together with the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative, the united concept was named One Belt, One Road. The concept prioritizes political coordination between countries, infrastructure interconnection, continual trade, free movement of capital and consolidation of nations.

Belarus was one of the first states to support China's initiative. Belarus has joined two of four key routes of the new Silk Road project.
