Voting over in municipal elections in Belarus

MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – The voting part of the campaign to elect members of the 28th convocation municipal councils of deputies is now over, BelTA has learned.

As many as 5,870 polling stations were set up for the elections. They were closed at 20:00.

Polling station commissions are now busy counting the votes. Plans have been made to present preliminary results by the morning of 19 February.

According to the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus, as of 18:00 as many as 4,882,786 citizens on the voter lists have cast their votes. Voter turnout reached 70.54%.

More police personnel were put on duty due to the municipal elections yet the Belarusian Interior Ministry has not registered any violations at polling stations.

A total of 6,929,525 people were on the voter lists. Some 22,200 people stood as candidates during the municipal elections, vying to get slightly more than 18,000 seats in local councils of deputies.
