UNIDO Secretariat delegation visits Minsk

MINSK, 23 April (BelTA) – Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas met with a delegation of the Secretariat of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) headed by Chief of the Regional Division for Europe and Central Asia Jacek Cukrowski on 20 April, the press service of the ministry told BelTA.

The meeting was a follow-up to the discussion between Belarus' Deputy Minister and the UNIDO Director General Li Yong held in Vienna in March 2018.

The parties shared their views on the progress in the implementation of the UNIDO projects and regional programs of technical assistance in Belarus and on the prospects for expanding cooperation between Belarus and UNIDO in energy efficiency, resource-efficient and cleaner production, innovations and digital economy. The participants of the meeting considered elaborating an updated framework program of cooperation between Belarus and UNIDO and opening the UNIDO office in Belarus.

UNIDO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that supports states in modernizing industrial production, ensuring safe and sustainable industrial development, spreading and adapting of new technologies, personnel training. Belarus has been involved in UNIDO activities since 1985. UNIDO was among the first international organizations that provided technical assistance to Belarus for minimizing the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.

In 2017, Alena Kupchyna, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the international organizations in Vienna, was elected to the post of the Chairman of the UNIDO General Conference.
