UN Human Rights Council's resolution on Belarus slammed as another example of double standards

MINSK, 23 June (BelTA) – The adoption of the resolution on Belarus by the United Nations Human Rights Council is another example of double standards, spokesperson for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told BelTA.

“The adoption of the resolution on Belarus by the UN Human Rights Council is another example of double standards imposed on this body evaluating the human rights situation in different countries. I stress that these standards are imposed, since the anti-Belarusian resolution was supported by only 18 out of 47 member states of the Human Rights Council,” Dmitry Mironchik noted.

“Belarus' position remains the same. We do not recognize country resolutions and the mandates of special rapporteurs they establish,” Dmitry Mironchik added. He believes that the money spent on them (which is millions of U.S. dollars) could be used to make a real contribution to addressing human rights challenges in the countries that truly need this.

Dmitry Mironchik pointed out that Belarus cooperates closely with the UN Human Rights Council as part of the Universal Periodic Review. “We cooperate actively with the human rights treaty bodies. We are one of the 33 countries that have submitted all the reports on time,” he stressed.

Last year Belarus adopted the National Human Rights Plan, and has been working consistently to implement it maintaining direct contact with the UN agencies. “We will continue this sector-specific mutually beneficial interaction irrespective of the politically-biased decision by the UN Human Rights Council on Belarus,” Dmitry Mironchik said.
