MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – The United Nations General Assembly will adopt the Belarus-sponsored resolution on the role of translation in bringing nations closer to each other, BelTA learned from Dmitry Mironchik, Head of the Information Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on 18 May.

According to the source, the resolution has been initiated by Belarus with assistance of Azerbaijan. The resolution on the role of professional translation in bringing nations closer to each other, in bolstering peace, and fostering mutual understanding and development is supposed to be adopted by the UN General Assembly on 24 May. “It is the first resolution of the kind in the United Nations Organization,” pointed out Dmitry Mironchik.

The resolution is unique because for the first time ever translation, interpretation as well as translators and interpreters are recognized as an important practical instrument in enhancing and preserving multilingualism in the world. The resolution is meant to promote cultural and linguistic diversity and assist with the improvement of translation and interpretation in the United Nations Organization.

As a token of respect for the work of translators and interpreters, who contribute to the successful interaction of nations within the framework of the United Nations Organization, the resolution will establish International Translation Day. It will be marked every year on 30 September, the day of Saint Jerome, who is considered the Christian patron saint of translators, said Dmitry Mironchik.
