Ukrainian parliament rebuked for false number of Belarusians in OSCE monitoring mission

MINSK, 5 October (BelTA) – In an interview with the Ukrainian TV channel TSN First Vice Speaker of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada Irina Gerashchenko stated that the number of Belarusians in the OSCE's special monitoring mission to Ukraine has increased many times over in the last 12 months. Deputy Chairwoman of the International Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Olga Popko made a few comments in response to that, BelTA has learned.

Olga Popko said: “Frankly speaking, I've never tried to track the nationality of every observer in this mission. The number of Belarusians, who are Ukrainian citizens, may have increased. However, if we are talking about the country citizenship, I'd pay more attention to original sources such as the OSCE website. Anyone can access the official and public information, stating that at present the mission employs eight citizens of Belarus. Their number was seven a year ago. One can hardly say that the number has increased several times over.”

“I also feel sorry for other mission observers, who were mentioned during the interview: their number has even decreased over the last 12 months,” added the MP.

Olga Popko also pointed out that for the last few years Belarus has acted responsibly to offer a negotiation venue for resolving the crisis in Ukraine. The parliamentarian stressed that the Belarusian side is ready to continue putting as much effort as possible into resolving the crisis in Ukraine.
