Ukraine ready for compromises in POW release talks

MINSK, 26 August (BelTA) – Ukraine is ready for compromises in negotiations for the sake of releasing hostages, BelTA learned from First Vice Speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Irina Gerashchenko, who represents Kiev in the working group on humanitarian affairs of the trilateral contact group on resolving the crisis in Ukraine, on 26 August.

Irina Gerashchenko said: “The humanitarian block in the Minsk agreements is a very important one. In this block we would like to see the greatest compromises, we are ready for these greatest compromises for the sake of two goals: all hostages and all the illegally detained persons should be released and international humanitarian missions should be granted unhindered access to the entire conflict territory.”

The Security Service of Ukraine believes that as many as 116 military personnel and civilians are illegally detained.

“In order to extract our guys, we are ready for compromises. Which ones? Nobody is being held illegally in the Ukrainian territory. We are a law-bound country. Naturally, those, who break Ukrainian laws, get detained in accordance with the Criminal Code. But since we have to fight for every Ukrainian, we try to utilize every legal mechanism to release our guys,” explained the First Vice Speaker of the Ukrainian parliament.
