Ukraine President intends to appoint Ambassador to Belarus soon

MINSK, 26 August (BelTA) – Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko intends to appoint Ambassador to Belarus soon, Irina Gerashchenko, First Vice Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, the representative of Kiev in the working group on humanitarian affairs of the Ukraine trilateral contact group, told reporters, BelTA has learned.

“During the meeting with the Ukrainian diplomatic corps on 24 August Ukraine's President said that he would appoint Ukrainian Ambassador to Belarus soon,” Irina Gerashchenko said.

The residential complex of the Belarusian Embassy in Kiev was inaugurated on 26 August. Irina Gerashchenko called this event symbolic. “We welcome the intensification of our bilateral dialogue,” the First Vice Speaker of Parliament said.

Irina Gerashchenko noted that Ukraine is closely monitoring the electoral campaign in Belarus. “We think that after the election of the new Belarusian Parliament we need to intensify inter-parliamentary dialogue. The inter-parliamentary commission on cooperation between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the National Assembly of Belarus has been on hiatus and has not met in the last few years. This is wrong,” the First Vice Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament said.
