Tentative plans for Belarusian-Chinese think tank to analyze international agenda

MINSK, 2 August (BelTA) – Establishing a Belarusian-Chinese international agenda analysis center in the National Confucius Institute of Sinology at the Belarusian State University has been suggested. The idea was discussed as Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Rakhmanov met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Belarus Cui Qiming, the press service of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament told BelTA.

Sergei Rakhmanov put forward the idea to create the Belarusian-Chinese analytical center before the ambassador. The senator explained: “We need quality analytics on the most important items on the international agenda and on matters concerning our bilateral cooperation. A new center could provide it by resorting to services of a large number of specialists and experts. Not only scientists, but those, who deal with such matters in practice.”

Cui Qiming also mentioned the important role quality analytics plays in the operation of government agencies and governments. He reminded that a discussion platform had been arranged at premises of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Belarusian and Chinese scientists use the platform to discuss political and economic matters of utmost importance for the two countries as well as prospects of cooperation in trade, economy, science, and technology. “It is a think tank where the sides can exchange opinions about the matters they are most concerned about,” said the ambassador.

Topical aspects of bilateral cooperation were mentioned during the meeting. Belarus-China strategic partnership was underlined, with the China-Belarus industrial park Great Stone mentioned as the greatest joint project. The industrial park now attracts major international companies. For instance, the possibility of expanding the presence of the German private sector in the industrial park was discussed with members of the Saxony parliament delegation in the Council of the Republic on 1 August.
