Security situation in conflict zone in Ukraine on the mend

MINSK, 7 September (BelTA) – The security situation in the conflict zone in Ukraine has improved significantly, BelTA learned from Martin Sajdik, the OSCE's special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine, in Minsk on 7 September.

Martin Sajdik said: “One can say that sun shines upon our negotiations. Representatives of several areas in Donetsk Oblast and Lugansk Oblast unanimously agreed that the security situation has improved considerably thanks to the silence regime, which is observed as from the beginning of the academic year. We also heard the same opinion of today's situation from head of the OSCE special monitoring mission, Ambassador Apakan.”

According to Martin Sajdik, members of the subgroup on humanitarian affairs discussed the internal movement of civilians and refugees during the meeting on 7 September. The subgroup's coordinator, Ambassador Toni Frisch underlined the importance of securing long-term solutions meant to alleviate the drastic humanitarian situation particularly in view of the coming winter.

“Members of the subgroup on political affairs discussed the modality of municipal elections as well as the financing of the election campaign and financial aspects of organizing elections in several areas in Donetsk Oblast and Lugansk Oblast taking into account the existing international experience. Members of the group exchanged views on amnesty,” said the diplomat.
