Sajdik calls upon Ukraine conflict parties to reach agreement on freeing prisoners by New Year

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) – The parties to the conflict in Ukraine should reach an agreement on releasing prisoners by New Year, OSCE special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine Martin Sajdik told media on 8 December, BelTA informs.

“In the working group on humanitarian affairs we have discussed the issues related to the release and exchange of illegally held persons and the compiling of the list of missing people. In this respect I would like to call upon the parties to secure prompt demining activities, especially in the checkpoints at the contact line or at least seal the mined areas. Apart from that, we need to reach progress in freeing illegally held people and searching for the missing persons. We need to make considerable progress in these issues by New Year,” said Martin Sajdik.

In his words, to settle these issues the parties should use the many-year experience of the International Committee of the Red Cross, in particular, in compiling the lists of prisoners and missing persons. The special representative stressed that it should be done promptly.
