Over 6.9m people on voter lists in 2018 local elections in Belarus

MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – More than 6.9 million people have been registered to vote at the elections to the local councils of deputies of the 28th convocation in Belarus, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission Lidia Yermoshina told BelTA on 7 February.

The total number of registered voters stands at 6.929 million. Lidia Yermoshina refrained from making any voter turnout predictions. She stressed, however, that Belarusians are well-informed about the election campaign. In her words, 7 February was the last day the people were to receive materials about the candidates to deputies, the election date and place. Such materials have already been sent to Minsk citizens. Public awareness efforts are as active in the regions.

On 7 February, Lidia Yermoshina met with representatives of precinct electoral commissions of Minsk's Tsentralny District, faculty staff and active students of Belarusian State University of Physical Culture to talk about the preparations for the local elections. The participants asked the most topical questions arising during the election campaign.

The results of a voter awareness survey in Tsentralny District were voiced during the meeting. The survey was conducted by the Youth Sociology Laboratory in cooperation with the Center for Sociological and Political Studies of Belarusian State University. The respondents demonstrated high awareness of the election campaign. They were also able to give a personal opinion on the problems of their district, which need to be solved immediately.

The precinct electoral commissions are completely ready for the elections which are scheduled for 18 February, Head of the Tsentralny District Administration Igor Buzovsky told the media. The work is underway to attract the voters to the polling stations in Minsk. For instance, every polling station in Tsentralny District will host family-oriented, educational, and other kinds of events.
