Opinion: Continued CIS membership serves the interests of Ukrainians

MINSK, 23 April (BelTA) – Continued CIS membership serves the interests of Ukrainians, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev told the media in Minsk on 23 April, BelTA informs.

Sergei Lebedev remarked that the CIS has not yet received any official documents on Ukraine's withdrawal. “We have not discussed this matter with the Ukrainian party. Moreover, my numerous letters to Ukraine still remain unanswered,” said Sergei Lebedev.

The instructions given by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to the government to prepare the proposals on the official exit of Ukraine from the CIS have remained instructions so far, Sergei Lebedev said. “We will wait and see what decision that Ukrainian government will take, what recommendations will be given. The majority of experts think that neither Ukraine nor the other CIS countries will benefit from Ukraine's withdrawal. Due to the geopolitical location and strong ties with all the CIS members, Ukraine is viewed as a partner and a neighbor. The majority of the CIS countries would like Ukraine to remain such a good neighbor,” said Sergei Lebedev.

“We would like the extensive interaction with Ukraine to remain in place,” Sergei Lebedev added.
