MINSK, 25 April (BelTA) – Belarus is ready for cooperation with the European Union only on terms of mutual respect, BelTA learned from Chairman of the International Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Valery Voronetsky as he commented on another resolution on Belarus that the European Parliament passed on 19 April.

The MP noted it was advisable to remind certain European Parliament members that as a sovereign and independent state Belarus is a full-value partner of the European Union within the framework of the Eastern Partnership Initiative. “We can continue working together for the sake of creating a stable, prosperous and competitive Greater Europe without dividing lines only on terms of equality and mutual respect,” he stressed.

Valery Voronetsky remarked that it amuses him a bit when the European Parliament assumes the right to present charges against or make demands of Belarus as if the country were already a European Union member or fully dependent on it. “Today the European Union — due to its own blunders among other things — faces multiple challenges and threats starting with the sphere of geopolitics, security, economy, its own institutional and structural strength and ending with problems of illegal migration and the observance of human rights in some European Union member states. It obviously cannot but make a certain impression on the content and the nature of the European Union's foreign policy steps. I still find it strange that the European Parliament is unwilling to see problems in its own house and seek ways to resolve them and, instead, prefers looking for shortcomings in third countries even if there are none,” said the MP.

Valery Voronetsky noted that, in turn, Belarus maintains a responsible and constructive stance and does its best to minimize negative consequences of the geopolitical tension, which has emerged in the region out of the country's own volition, in a bid to bolster peace, stability, and security in Europe.
