MINSK, 26 December (BelTA) – A ceasefire went into effect in eastern Ukraine at midnight on 23 December (Kiev time), BelTA has learned.
Martin Sajdik, the OSCE's special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine, told the media about the “New Year ceasefire” following the final round of talks in 2017. According to the statement made by the diplomat, “the Trilateral Contact Group with the participation of representatives from certain areas of Donetsk Oblast and Lugansk Oblast, in connection with the forthcoming Christmas and New Year festivities, stress the necessity to ensure peace and tranquility”. The sides also “reaffirm their commitment to a comprehensive, sustainable and unlimited ceasefire starting at 00:00 on 23 December 2017 (Kiev time).
The contact group also confirmed the ambition to accomplish, as earlier agreed, the exchange of detainees before the New Year and Christmas holidays.
The sides expressed their common commitment to the full implementation of the Minsk Agreements.
Earlier on, ceasefire agreements were announced in eastern Ukraine for the period of harvest campaign and the new school year.More about Politics
