Needs assessment mission recommends sending 430 OSCE ODIHR observers to elections in Belarus

MINSK, 12 September (BelTA) – The needs assessment mission sent by the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE ODIHR) has recommended the organization should send 30 long-term observers and 400 short-term observers to monitor the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Belarus, BelTA learned from Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina on 12 September.

The needs assessment mission worked in Belarus in August. “They've shared their report with us. The report indicates that the mission recommends that the OSCE ODIHR should send a mission of 30 long-term observers and 400 short-term observers,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

“We have not been notified yet when they are supposed to arrive,” the official added.

As for international observers, 30 people representing the Commonwealth of Independent States have been granted accreditation.

On the whole, the election campaign proceeds with a large number of observers. The CEC has granted accreditation to seven observers representing political parties and public associations while territorial and constituency election commissions have accredited 261 observers.
