MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) - Belarus is eager to expand the pragmatic cooperation with the Council of Europe, Andrei Naumovich, the chairman of the standing commission on human rights, national relations and mass media of the House of Representatives, said at a meeting of the PACE Political Affairs and Democracy in Strasbourg, France, on 25 January, BelTA has learned.

According to Andrei Naumovich, the National Assembly is satisfied with the positive development of interaction between Belarus and the Council of Europe, including the joint work on the implementation of the action plan for Belarus 2016-2017. In January 2018 the CoE Committee of Ministers, in agreement with Belarus, decided to extend the action plan till 2018, the MP recalled. “We are interested in expanding the pragmatic cooperation with the Council of Europe, particularly in part of accession to the conventions and agreements,” he stressed.

Andrei Naumovich noted that he would like the PACE members to maintain regular contacts with the Belarusian MPs to obtain the information about the situation in the country. “During the meeting of the commission on 10 October 2017 I noted the importance of involving the Belarusian parliamentarians in the work of other commissions, possibly through the conclusion of a memorandum of understanding with the Assembly. I would appreciate it if the PACE considered this initiative,” he said.

The MP also drew attention to the fact that the Belarusian side continues to examine the question of the death penalty. This year will see a number of activities in this area with the participation of international experts.

In addition, Andrei Naumovich recalled that on 18 February Belarus will hold the elections to the local councils of deputies which is an important political event for the society and the state. The MP assured that all necessary measures are being taken to conduct the political campaign in accordance with the national legislation and international commitments of the country. The forthcoming elections will be observed by national and foreign observers (accredited diplomats).
