Minsk to host OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group conference in spring 2019

MINSK, 9 August (BelTA) – A conference of the Silk Road Support Group of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly will take place in Minsk in spring 2019, BelTA learned from Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko on 9 August.

The proposal made by Belarusian MPs was backed by the 27th session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which took place in Berlin in July. “The initiative has been backed by the head of state. I would like to see a responsible attitude to preparations for the forum,” said the head of the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament. He went on saying that Belarus' balanced, peace-loving diplomatic policy and an active dialogue with Western partners encourage a serious interest in the Belarusian parliament. The fact opens up new platforms and opportunities for the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus to pursue international activities.

According to Vladimir Andreichenko, international parliamentary activities are intensive this year. In particular, Belarusian MPs are expected to take a most active part in a number of large-scale international forums. The 39th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) will take place in Singapore in early September. It will focus on sustainable and innovative society. The theme is concordant with the goals and tasks facing Belarusian MPs. The event is supposed to become an effective platform for presenting Belarus' innovation potential before Southeast Asian countries, said Vladimir Andreichenko.

The Second Eurasian Women's Forum is supposed to take place in Saint Petersburg in September. An autumn session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly will take place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan in October. The third conference of speakers of Eurasian parliaments will take place in Antalya, Turkey. The 139th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will take place in Geneva, Switzerland. “All these events should be used not only for discussing political matters – which is definitely important and has serious value – but also for promoting the country's trade, economic, and investment appeal, for helping diversify target markets of Belarusian products. Politics and economy should go hand in hand, mutually complementing and enriching each other,” concluded Vladimir Andreichenko.

Bilateral interparliamentary relations are expected to advance. The dialogue with the Polish parliament will be furthered when a delegation of the parliament's friendship group visits Belarus. A visit of the Belarusian working group on cooperation with the German parliament to Berlin in November 2018 looks promising for establishing contacts and developing constructive cooperation. Plans have been made to arrange visits to Azerbaijan, Estonia, China, and Canada. Belarus will welcome parliamentary delegations from Egypt, Indonesia, and Romania.

Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Boleslav Pirshtuk told media that American congressmen will be invited to visit Belarus. “We will send an invitation. American congressmen will decide on optimal time for visiting the country. It is important for us to have a dialogue. The parliament is interested in such contacts,” he said.
