Minsk hosts national consultations on global compact for migration

MINSK, 17 May (BelTA) - The national consultations on the preparations for the negotiation process for the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration were held in Minsk under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Interior Ministry and the International Organization for Migration office in Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Representatives of the government bodies of Belarus, the UN agencies and civil society organizations discussed a wide range of issues related to capacity-building and improvement of the national migration policy, the interrelation between migration and development. Special attention was paid to the development of international cooperation for the effective management of migration at the national, regional and global levels, and combating illegal migration and human trafficking.

“Belarus was one of the first countries in the region to organize the national consultations on the issue. Recommendations that will be worked out in the course of the event will form the basis of Belarus' position on the negotiations on the global compact for migration,” the ministry said.

The global compact will be adopted at the international conference on migration which will take place at the UN headquarters in autumn 2018. It will set out a range of principles, commitments and understandings among member states regarding international migration in all its dimensions, make an important contribution to global governance and enhance coordination on international migration.
