Makei: Belarus ready to host the Pope

MINSK, 27 May (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to host the Pope, Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told media, BelTA has learned.

The Minister said that no specific date of a visit has been talked about. But there is readiness. According to him, Belarus is ready to not only host the Pontiff for the visit but also arrange a meeting with the head of the Russian Orthodox Church on the Belarusian land.

“We believe that, in any case, the visit should be aimed to create more harmony and ensure greater peace in the interfaith community in Belarus. It is from these positions that we will approach the organization of the Pope's visit to our country,” the Minister noted.

When speaking about the relations with the Vatican, Vladimir Makei said that they are at a high level. Belarus is grateful to the Vatican for its pragmatic well-balanced position on EU's restrictive measures against Belarus. “We hope that this high level of relations with the Vatican will be preserved in the future,” the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs said.
