Local election campaign in Belarus seen as calm, well-organized

MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) - The campaign for the election of deputies to local councils in Belarus is running smooth and calm, Chairperson of the Belarusian Central Election Commission Lidia Yermoshina told the media on 7 February, BelTA has learned.

According to Lidia Yermoshina, the election campaign in Belarus “is calm and well-organized.” She noted, however, that the number of candidates had decreased. Some have withdrawn from the pre-election race. This phenomenon, however, is not of a mass character. Minsk continues to show the highest competition for seats at the local councils.

The CEC chairwoman explained the reason behind a decreased number of candidates. “Many candidates have the same programs, and unite the efforts,” she said, adding that this is a common practice.

Despite the decrease in the number of candidates, there is no constituency in Belarus where there are no candidates.

Elections to the local councils of deputies in Belarus are scheduled for 18 February 2018. Early voting will be available from 13 to 17 February. A total of 22,713 people registered as candidates. More than 18,000 deputies of local councils will be elected in Belarus.
