Li Yong re-elected UNIDO Director General

VIENNA, 27 November (BelTA) – Li Yong was re-elected Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) at the 17th session of the UNIDO General Conference in the Vienna International Center on 27 November, BelTA informs.

The new contract for appointment of the director general was signed on behalf of the UNIDO member states by Alena Kupchyna, Chairperson of the 17th session of the General Conference, Belarusian Ambassador to Austria, Belarus' Permanent Representative to the international organizations in Vienna.

UNIDO was established in 1966 by the UN General Assembly. In 1986, it became a specialized agency of the United Nations. The organization currently has 168 member states.

UNIDO promotes the industrial development of developing and middle-income countries by helping them work out industrial development plans and programs, obtain new technologies and adjust them to specific conditions of these countries, and also train domestic specialists.

The General Conference is the supreme legislative body of UNIDO. The conference meets every two years to define the key principles of UNIDO's work, review the reports of the Industrial Development Board, the director general, and subsidiary bodies of the conference. It also discusses UNIDO's program of work, regular and operating budget, establishes the scale of contributions, and approves financial provisions.
