Lebedev: Cooperation within the CIS enables us to better address global economic challenges

MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) – The cooperation within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) enables the member states to better address global economic challenges, Chairman of the Executive Committee – CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev told reporters on 28 September, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Lebedev believes that the negative impact of the global economic downturn on the CIS member states would be much worse if it were not for the cooperation. “Of course, we are facing some difficulties arising from the global crisis and the western policy of sanctions, but these difficulties get overcome. It is noteworthy that the next meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council in Minsk on 28 October will review the status of implementation of the joint plan of action to tackle these negative impacts. The heads of government will discuss the plan and, I hope, will give some instructions, recommendations on further action,” Sergei Lebedev said.

“We are confident that if we did not join our efforts, we would have had a harder time today. Now we feel that we have grown more resilient to the global economic and financial crisis than we were, for example, in 2008-2009 when we did not have such an action plan,” Sergei Lebedev noted.
