Lebedev: CIS hopes U.S. will abandon its policy of sanctions

MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) – The countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) hope that the United States will abandon its practice of imposing sanctions, CIS Executive Secretary, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev told media on 28 September, BelTA has learned.

“We strongly hope that the United States of America will give up on its policy of sanctions. The voice of Europeans becomes louder regarding the inappropriateness of the sanctions,” noted Sergei Lebedev.

In his words, the CIS member states are always ready for building constructive mutually beneficial relations with its western and eastern partners.

According to Sergei Lebedev, representatives of the CIS member states: members of government bodies, diplomatic missions accredited in Belarus, ambassadors and CIS plenipotentiaries, representatives of the CIS bodies and basic organizations, members of the Committee of Economic Affairs under the CIS Economic Council, heads of the biggest scientific and education institutions, leading scientists and specialists, cultural figures have gathered in Minsk to summarize the results of the CIS' 25-year activity and work out recommendations to enhance the efficiency of the CIS.

The conference will include four sections: economic cooperation and the improvement of the legal basis in the CIS member states; science and innovative cooperation of the CIS member states, cooperation of the CIS member states in culture, tourism, sport and youth policy; and collaboration in security, crime and terrorism prevention.
