Lavrov rules out possibility of Russian military presence in Belarus without authorities' consent

MOSCOW, 23 June (BelTA) – Deploying Russian military bases in Belarus is impossible without the consent of the Belarusian authorities, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov said in an interview to the Belarusian media on 23 June, BelTA has learned.

“I have not heard that the issue of a military base [Russian airbase] has been recently revisited. We took notice of the decision that the President of the Republic of Belarus took within the scope of his competence and we respect it,” said Sergei Lavrov. There is no deploying of Russian troops in Belarus without the consent of the Belarusian leadership.

Sergei Lavrov again emphasized that the military exercises, which are held regularly in Belarus with the participation of the Russian armed forces, are the result of the decisions taken by heads of state in a transparent manner, in full compliance with the obligations within the framework of the Union State.
