Kyrgyzstan to host about 40 events during its CIS chairmanship

MINSK, 19 January (BelTA) – Kyrgyzstan is expected to host nearly 40 events during its chairmanship in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), CIS Plenipotentiaries Council is headed by Kyrgyzstan's plenipotentiary in the CIS, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kyrgyzstan to Belarus Kubanychbek Omuraliev told media on 19 January, BelTA informs.

“The plan includes about 40 events. The plan will be finalized this week to be soon approved and presented to the public,” the diplomat informed. In his words, the plan will include traditional political, sport, cultural and humanitarian events. As for the political agenda, a meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council is scheduled for 16 September in Bishkek. It will be joined by the meetings of the CIS Heads of Government Council and the CIS Foreign Ministers Council.

During Kyrgyzstan's chairmanship the CIS will pay special attention to the development of contacts in the Eurasian Economic Union.

“25 years of cooperation in the CIS showed that it is the only platform for the post-Soviet countries to cooperate in the political and economic sectors. This international organization is a success,” said Kubanychbek Omuraliev.

Speaking about the possible reform and optimization of the CIS, the diplomat said that the time is ripe for this. "First and foremost the reform will apply to the sectoral organizations to avoid duplication of functions," he noted.

Kazakhstan handed the CIS chairmanship over to Kyrgyzstan. This year the CIS Plenipotentiaries Council is headed by Kyrgyzstan's plenipotentiary in the CIS, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kyrgyzstan to Belarus Kubanychbek Omuraliev. On 19 January he presented Kyrgyzstan's CIS chairmanship concept.
