Kuchma: No alternative to Minsk agreements

MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) – Ukraine should appreciate the Minsk format of the negotiations on the Donbass situation rather then look for other formats, including the Budapest one, Leonid Kuchma, former Ukrainian president and one of the signatories to the Minsk agreements, said, TASS reports.

Leonid Kuchma criticized proposals made by some politicians to hold negotiations in the “Budapest format” (Russia, the USA, the UK, and Ukraine). “Do they really think that Donald Trump or Theresa May will join the negotiation process? They are the signatories to the Budapest Memorandum. The Normandy Four has not convened since 2016, and they think they can bring these leaders together?” Leonid Kuchma said.

He urged “to make use of the things we have instead of trying to build castles which we will never build”.

As it has been reported, Leonid Kuchma decided to resign as the plenipotentiary representative of Ukraine in the contact group on Eastern Ukraine. He explained that he had made this decision long ago. “I have made up to 100 visits to Minsk during the past four years, and every meeting had to deal with a heap of problems,” Leonid Kuchma said. He noted that it is difficult for him to take part in the Minsk meetings, especially physically.
