Koreas declare end to military confrontation

PANMUNJOM, 27 April (BelTA –Yonhap) - The leaders of the two Koreas took a meaningful, perhaps sensational, step Friday towards a lasting peace on the peninsula during their Panmunjom summit that was meant to write a "new history."

The following is a summary of the Panmunjom Declaration announced after Friday's summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un.

South and North Korea agree to:

-- establish a joint liaison office in Kaesong to smoothly ensure civil-sector exchanges and cooperation

-- hold reunions of separated families on the occasion of the Aug. 15 Liberation Day

-- take practical steps to utilize the Donghae and Gyeongui railways and other roads by connecting and modernizing them

-- completely suspend all hostile acts on land, sea and air against each other and work together to make the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) an actual peace zone

-- make the western Northern Limit Line (NLL) a sea of peace to prevent accidental military clashes, and take actual measures to guarantee safe fishing activities

-- frequently hold military talks, including between defense ministers, and hold general-level dialogue in May

-- reaffirm non-aggression agreement and work together to strictly observe it

-- work together to realize phased arms reduction in line with tension reduction and confidence building

-- actively push to hold three-way talks, involving the two Koreas and the United States, or four-way talks, involving the two Koreas, the U.S. and China, to declare an end to the Korean War, change the armistice into a peace treaty and establish a lasting, solid peace regime

-- reaffirm the shared goal of realizing a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula through the complete denuclearization

Two leaders agree to

-- frequently and earnestly discuss crucial issues regarding Korean people and solidify mutual trust through regular summits and direct telephone calls

-- make joint efforts to further expand the good move towards the continued development of inter-Korean ties, peace and prosperity on the peninsula and reunification

-- facilitate President Moon's visit to Pyongyang this autumn
