Hungary in favor of just approach to Belarus in EU

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) - Hungary is in favor of a just approach to Belarus in the European Union, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said as he met with Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei on 22 June, BelTA has learned.

“We are advocating a just approach to Belarus by the European Union. Your country can become a bridge between the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union,” said Peter Szijjarto.

Hungary welcomes the EU decision to lift a part of sanctions from Belarus, Peter Szijjarto told the media. “We welcome this process. We also welcome the visa facilitation between Belarus and the European Union and would like the EU help Belarus' economic development. Seeing your economic achievements, we also support Belarus' in the WTO accession talks,” he noted.

The minister stressed that the primary task for Hungary is to develop a good and mutually beneficial cooperation between Belarus and the EU. “Hungary is convinced that in order to restore the competitiveness of the EU as an organization we need fruitful and effective relations with neighbor countries. Living in Central Europe, we understand: If the relations between the West and the East are bad, then the situation in our countries is worsening. If the relations are improving, this accordingly, benefit our countries. We are supposed to facilitate good relations between West and East, and in this regard, I wish to thank Belarus,” Peter Szijjarto said.
