Giorgi Margvelashvili: Belarus-Georgia relations get a new impetus

MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) – The relations between Belarus and Georgia have acquired a new impetus, Georgia President Giorgi Margvelashvili said in an interview to the Belarus One TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“I have been actively preparing for my trip to Belarus as the relations between our countries, which have a huge potential, have been gathering a fresh impetus since 2015,” said Giorgi Margvelashvili.

In his words, Alexander Lukashenko's visit to Georgia in April 2015 opened a new page in the relations between the two states. “The openness Alexander Grigoryevich [Lukashenko] has, the focus on the most important issues we are addressing for the benefit of the nations have helped us intensify the relations between our countries at the intergovernmental and bilateral level. Business contacts have been gaining momentum as well. I am happy to see this progress and that the relations between the leaders and governments of the two countries and also the people will be acquiring a new format,” Giorgi Margvelashvili noted.

The Georgia President also noted that Belarus and Georgia have a huge potential for expanding cooperation in various sectors. This potential, however, still remains hugely untapped. “If we take a look at our trade turnover, we will see that Belarus is Georgia's 11th biggest trading partner. I am confident that we can increase the figures. The expansion of the relations between our states will definitely promote business,” the President said.
